Will attempting to bribe a border guard be considered a criminal offense?

I recently learned of a case where a man tried to bribe a border guard to "cover up" a scheme to smuggle illegal immigrants across the border. He was offered $4,000, but the border guard refused. Would it be a criminal offense on my part if I were in that man's shoes and tried to bribe him?
