How is a bank liable for the actions of its employee?

I read about a case where a bank employee stole a large sum of money from my deposit, but she did it while performing her official duties and using genuine bank documents. Please tell me, if such a situation happens to me and a bank employee turns out to be a fraudster, can I get my money back from the bank, even if the documents turn out to be forged but everything looked official? Who can I actually sue in such a case and expect compensation from?
