Consumer rights protection when food prices rise

I'm currently worried about news regarding disruptions in global fertilizer supplies and rising food prices. If food products in stores become significantly more expensive due to such global events, does the law somehow protect ordinary buyers? Can I challenge a sharp, unjustified increase in food prices, and how can I determine if the increase is illegal?
