Alternative service during mobilization

16.12.2025 10:05 • Question

I read that a man did not appear at the military commissariat due to his religious beliefs, wanting to undergo alternative (non-military) service, but the court did not allow it and even convicted him. It is not entirely clear to me: is it really impossible now in Ukraine to replace military service during mobilization with alternative service if it contradicts my religious views? Is there any legal way to exercise the right to alternative service in this case?

The performance of alternative (non-military) service is determined by the Law of Ukraine "On Alternative (Non-Military) Service" and the Regulation on the Procedure for Performing Alternative (Non-Military) Service. Alternative service is a service introduced instead of conscript military service in peacetime, however, the replacement of military service by conscription during mobilization with alternative (non-military) service is not provided for by law. Under martial law or a state of emergency, certain restrictions on citizens' right to undergo alternative service may be established, specifying the duration of these restrictions. Alternative service in Ukraine is not applied during wartime. The defense of the homeland is the duty of every male citizen of Ukraine aged 18 to 60.
