Heirs' liability for deceased's debts

I have the following question: if I inherit property from a relative who left a large debt, can I be required to pay this debt? And if so, what amount would I be risking — only the value of the inheritance or could I lose something else? I would like to understand how this works in practice and who bears the burden of proving the value of the inherited property.
