Extension of the validity of 1994 model passports

I saw that the issue of old 1994 model passports was mentioned. Is it already known for how long this passport can be used and is it mandatory to switch to an ID card in the near future? I'm wondering if there is a final date for such passports and if there will be any fines if I don't manage to replace it in time?

Currently, the legislation does not define a final expiration date for booklet-style passports.

If you have an old-style passport, it remains valid. However, you can exchange it for an ID card if you wish.

Exchanging the passport is mandatory if:

  • you have changed your last name, first name, or other personal data;
  • you have received or renounced your identification code (RNOKPP);
  • there is an error in the passport;
  • the document is damaged or worn out;
  • you have turned 25 or 45 years old and have not affixed a new photo within a month.

The answer is informational and does not replace a full legal consultation. For a detailed analysis of your situation, contact a lawyer directly.
