Can financing an election campaign from foreign sources be considered a crime?

I am following the news about the trial of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was found guilty of criminal complicity in the case of illegally financing his 2007 election campaign with funds from the regime of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. Could I get into legal trouble if I receive funding for my election campaign from foreign sources?
