Can a person be held liable for poisoning?

I read a news story about a woman in Australia who was sentenced to three life sentences for poisoning her relatives with mushrooms. I wonder if something similar happened in my home, could I accidentally poison someone close to me and could I be held criminally liable for it if it was unintentional?
