Can the accused independently correct the shortcomings of the appeal?

I am a defendant in a criminal case and my lawyer has filed an appeal, but it contains deficiencies. If I refuse the services of a lawyer, will I be able to correct these deficiencies myself and will the appellate court consider my appeal?
