After being released from captivity, a serviceman does not lose his status and related rights. According to Ukrainian legislation, in particular the Law of Ukraine "On Social and Legal Protection of Servicemen and Members of Their Families", he retains his place of service, position and average earnings for the period of captivity and until the moment of full restoration of combat readiness or discharge from service.

Upon return, the serviceman undergoes mandatory procedures, including a medical examination and, if necessary, counterintelligence measures (interrogation), as prescribed by law. This is standard practice aimed at ensuring state security and establishing the circumstances of being captured. In this case, there is a presumption of innocence, and the fact of being captured is not a basis for prosecution, unless the serviceman has committed war crimes or treason.
